You Burn Me
Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale Remade
Minneapolis Theatre Garage
711 West Franklin Avenue
Minneapolis
September 8 - September 24, 2006
William Shakespeare's classic tragicomedy The Winter's Tale is reborn as a gripping modern fable about the redeeming power of love and forgiveness in the nimbus original production You Burn Me. Created through an innovative workshop process, the play draws from the poetry of Sappho, the drama of Charles Mee, Hmong folk tales, Vaudeville, and many other sources to create a wholly unique performance filled with music, laughter, sorrow and joy.
Two men, both kings of their own domain, risk losing everything they hold dear through the destructive power of their inconsolable rage. The first, Leon, is a Hollywood movie magnate with legion of doting employees, a sweet young daughter, and a beautiful, loving wife named Helen. But Leon's empire crumbles when he becomes convinced that the unborn child Helen carries is really that of his boyhood friend. The second man, Paul, is a Las Vegas pastor with a burgeoning flock of faithful. He finds his daughter Flora cavorting in a burlesque house and, to his horror, discovers that she has begun a passionate romance with a beguiling female performer. Soon Paul's madness drives the young lovers far away.
What power can mend that which jealousy and bigotry tears apart? Both men must somehow learn that love can be ruined when possessed and controlled, and how through forgiveness and acceptance, it can be gracefully restored - as if by magic.
Ticket prices: Tickets are $16 for the opening night performance and gala, $14 on Fridays and Saturdays, and $12 on Thursdays and Sundays. There is a special pay-what-you-can performance on Monday, September 18th.
